New Kent, Virginia

Foreword

The Cavalier is presented to you, the
students of New Kent High School. In the
years to come, when school is only a vague
memory, may this book bring you many
hours of pleasure.

May it be a symbol of the hours spent
in studying, of the fun-loving times, and
of all the friends that you have made in
your twelve years of school.

Dedication

We the class of 1960 dedicate this book to Mrs.
Ila Williams who has given many years of hard work
and unlimited service to the support of our school.
We must pay her the tribute which she so richly de¬
serves. Her high ideals, character, and captivating
spirit are implanted in the lives of the girls she has
worked with. She is loved and respected by the
whole student body, and the class of 1960 would like
to take this opportunity to show our respect and love
for her.

Principal s Message

To this year's graduating class goes my earnest
wishes for a successful and gratifying future. I hope
that each of you will realize the ambitions, dreams,
and aspirations that you have developed while a stu¬
dent at New Kent High School. May you always
have a belief in the worth and dignity of your fellow
man and gauge your life accordingly.

Sincerely yours,

This Is Your Life

Class of '60, you have looked forward for years to the time when you would be re¬
leased from what you have fondly called "jail." Your "sentence" has been served; now
each of you must go his own way and find a place in the world.

Think back now upon the wonderful instructors you had, the friends you made, and
the adventures you shared during the past twelve years. Of course, you'll never forget,
but to help you to recall some of the outstanding events - Class of '60, THIS IS YOUR
LIFE!

In September, 1948, you originated as a class. Your growth has been that of any
normal youth; in the beginning you grew and grew; with maturity you have slimmed
down to a trim twenty-four.

Of the many sweet faces you will always remember, the first is that of petite Mrs.
Hockaday. Yes, she had the misfortune of beginning the taming of thirty-one little
wildcats. Of the group, there remain Shirley Alexander, Rose Boroughs, Kenny Bowyer,
Betty Gregory, Bobbie McCormick, Henry Pace, Bobby Paul, Carolynn Smith, Graham
Smith, Henry Ward, Herbert White, and Dorothy Wyndham. You delighted in many
new experiences without thought for the yet distant year of 1960. Do you remember
how proud you were to be "Four-and-Twenty Blackbirds Baked in a Pie" for May Day?

Recall that Mrs. Fisher advanced you in math and spelling in your second year. She
skillfully guided you and gave you more self-confidence. Rose Stuck was added to
your number.

You took your first class trip in the third grade. Mrs. Orange was your teacher who
thought you grown up enough to tour Yorktown. Mrs. Newton introduced you to "lan¬
guage."

In the fourth grade Miss Christian made you realize that you were no longer babies.
You felt even more grown up when you joined the fifth grade in the Virginia Reel for
May Day. One of the present twenty-four joined you at this point - Jean Seward from
West Point.

James Smith and Kathy Williams became a part of the class in the fifth grade at
which point Miss Shorter introduced you to exams. The graceful Minuet was your
contribution to May Day that year.

In the sixth grade you had become so independent that you arranged a surprise
party for Mrs. Robbins. Buddy Johnson was added to the class and you temporarily
lost two members - Dot Wyndham and Kathy Williams. Again you danced the Vir¬
ginia Reel, this time to help celebrate the county's 300th anniversary in the May Day
pageant.

Another West Pointer, Tommy Wilson, joined you in the seventh grade. For the
first time you elected class officers; Henry Ward was president. Severe discipline was
Mr. Steiger's method of preparing you for the big step into high school. But, there
were many good times to remember too. Most outstanding were your trip to Williams¬
burg and your Christmas program.

In 1955, you finally started down the home stretch; clubs were open to you; you
began changing classes; many different teachers entered the picture. Mrs. Perry was
your homeroom teacher. With her help and that of Mr. Rudacille, your math and
history teacher, you began to build a class treasury. You were happy to have Dot re¬
turn from South Carolina. Betty Gregory was your president and the lucky one to rep¬
resent you in the May Court.

Your Freshman year brought even more changes. For one thing, Latin and algebra
were added to your curriculum. You added another handsome new face, Lenny Madi¬
son. Mr. Waldrop put up with you in homeroom period. He helped you build up your
funds by sponsoring dances and various sales. To celebrate its twenty-fifth year, New
Kent High School held its first homecoming in September, 1956. Barbara Updike
proudly represented your group. Betty was again elected president and May Court rep¬
resentative.

Mr. Poindexter greeted you on your first day as Sophomores. The class had decreased
over the summer months, so that it seemed strange. However you did happily add to
your numbers by having Kathy Williams return from Africa and by welcoming a real
southern girl, lone Inman, from South Carolina. Catherine Adams represented you in
the May Court. With Buddy Johnson as class president, you continued to raise money
for future use on a prom and a seemingly distant senior trip. You were especially proud
of the sumptious dinner that Mrs. Williams helped you to serve the Farm Bureau.

Two more handsome faces, Bradley Moore and Donald Bradley, awaited you in your
"jolly Junior” year. Oh, how happy and proud you were to get your rings at last! Mrs.
Richmond and your president, Henry Ward, led you as you co-sponsored the Corn Club
Banquet and as you made plans for the best prom and play ever. Remember the good
♦times you had rehearsing and presenting "Later That Night"? Jean Seward represented
you in the May Court. Then came "Mardi Gras" ! You were all grateful to Mrs. Rich¬
mond and your parents for making it the best prom ever.

On September 2, 1959, you were twenty-four, having added Joyce Martin to your
group. Unbelievably, you were New Kent's Seniors. It is still hard to realize the
fact. However as you've sponsored the "shack" and displayed your acting talents in
the "flawless" production of "Pleased Ta Meetcha," doubtless you have begun to
realize that your dream of twelve years ago is truly now a reality. Choosing your an¬
nouncements and making plans for your New York trip have added to the realization.

It is time^now, Class of '60, to part. Your life as a group is at an end. May your
future have as many pleasant times as your "past" has had.

Yes, Seniors, THIS IS YOUR LIFE! Now - "The present is a fact; the past, a
memory; the future, a hope."

ram Club

The Monogram Club is composed of those people who have been awarded
recognition for their athletic or cheer-leading ability. Monograms are evi¬
dence of good team work and sportsmanship and are worn proudly by the
owners.

Bus Drivers

The above pictured bus drivers, Bradley Moore, Jack King, James Pearman,
Bobby Paul, Henry Ward, and Kenny Boyer have faithfully driven our young¬
sters to school day after day. They deserve recognition for their arduous job.
Not pictured: Mrs. Peace, Mr. Violet, and Mr. Parsley.

Our Custodian

Under the aid of Mr. Gordon Thompson, our janitor, the new locker room
for the girls is now completed. It is now being used happily by the athletic
girls.

Paper and
Careers

''TODAY there are more than 100,000
different uses for paper . . . and the
search for new uses never ends. That is
why this fast-growing industry is now the
fifth largest in the country . . . and why
it needs trained researchers and techni¬
cians for future growth.

Our company, a pioneer kraft manu¬
facturer, joins with other mills in spon¬
soring college scholarships in paper tech¬
nology. It also offers scholarships for
study in a subject of the student’s choice.
